Sun Safety for Kids

Nothing says British summertime quite like the frequent bursts of glorious sunshine mixed with torrential downpours - and this year is proving to be no exception!

Regardless, UV rays are still shining strongly upon us, which means that delicate skin is at serious risk of sun damage. The majority of which is caused by the age of 18, as children’s skin tends to be more sensitive than that of an adult.

Whilst skin cancer in children is rare, harm to the DNA of our skin cells during youth could lead to unpredictable damage in later life. Why? Because skin cancer can take years to develop, and studies have shown that sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.

So how can we keep our kids safe? By teaching children to enjoy the sun safely while they are young, you’re helping them develop good habits for the future. We don’t mean scaring youngsters with tales of skin cancer amongst sun worshipers, but by simply explaining the importance of using sunscreen to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays – after all, nobody enjoys sunburn!

This knowledge will help children develop a summer routine. After all, when it’s cold out they reach for their coats, wellies when it’s raining, and pajamas at bedtime. So why shouldn’t sunscreen, sunhats, and sunglasses be the natural reaction to a sunny day?

Once it’s become part of their usual routine, these habits will stick with them even while they’re at school. Since UV rays are at their strongest between 11 am and 3 pm, it’s important kids are protected on the playground so why not pick up a handy roll-on sunscreen? They’re incredibly easy to use, and school bag friendly!

Reapplying is key when it comes to sun protection, as there’s no such thing as an ‘all-day’ sunscreen! Also, don’t forget about the shade. In fact, our Sun Sensible campaign provides UK schools with the chance to win sheltered, outdoor playground equipment! Sign up your school today and help us to keep your kids sun safe.
