What does SPF mean?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of protection of the skin from burning (erythemal UV radiation). (1)

SPF is calculated by measuring the amount of time required to produce the first sign of reddening (erythema) on unprotected skin, and comparing it to the time it takes to produce the first sign of reddening (erythema) on skin protected with sunscreen. (2)
