Top Tips for Faking a Summer Tan

The sun is out, and so are our pasty pins. The obsession for a ‘healthy’ glow has grown rapidly over the years and unfortunately, baking in the sun has become more acceptable than embracing our fair skin. 

Unfortunately, this risky fashion trend has also seen an increase in skin cancer rates. So with sunbathing out of the picture, there’s just two options left for dealing with our natural skin tones – do what the Aussies do and embrace it, or fake it. It has been suggested that the average Aussie now is fairer than the average Brit.  But for those of us who aren’t blessed with the confidence to flaunt our porcelain assets, we bring to you the ultimate cheater’s guide to faking a summer glow. 

1. Find your perfect tanner
Luckily for us, fake tan no longer comes in one tangerine shade. Even the palest amongst us can achieve that sun-kissed glow, minus the sun damage. Invest some time into finding the perfect tanner for you. If you’re very pale, opt for gradual tanners for a more natural look. Dry skin? Lotions are best. Mousses and sprays will irritate dry skin, causing it to flake off much quicker. Try testing new tanners on an area of the body that’s easy to hide, after all it’s a lot easier to conceal a discoloured patch for a few days than your entire body! 

2. Exfoliate! 
Fake tan doesn’t fade, it flakes off. The active ingredient in fake tan is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the top layer of your skin to mimic the natural tanning process. By exfoliating, you’re removing the dead skin on top so that the ‘new’ skin can be exposed to the tanner, resulting in a more even and longer-lasting glow. 

3. Moisturise 
Drier areas of the body such as knees, elbows, wrists, ankles, hands and feet tend to soak up more fake tan than the rest of the body, which makes them darker. It’s important to moisturise these areas with a non-fragranced product, prior to tanning, to ensure an even colour. 

4.Protect your hands 
Never apply tan, even gradual ones, with bare hands. Instead, use latex gloves or a tanning mitt when applying your tan. When you’re finished, moisturise your hands, including wrists, then apply a small amount of tan to the back of one hand and rub the backs of your hands together. 

5. Start from the bottom 
Avoid smudging the work that you’ve already done by starting at the bottom. Apply the tanner to your shin and calf first, sweeping down over your ankle and foot. Then onto your thigh working from the front to the back, using the excess tan on your knee. Continue working your way up until you’re covered from head to toe. 

6. Let it dry 
Avoid tight clothing and ensure that your tan is dry before getting dressed. Drying time depends on the tan, for example mousses tend to dry much quicker than lotions. If you need to speed up the process then try using a hairdryer on a cool setting to help it dry.
